      UPDATE for anyone else that has this problem: I discovered that this issue only takes place when Relevanssi plugin is active. When Relevanssi is deactivated, Ivory Search includes and excludes custom field content per to the settings.

      So, it would appear that these two plugins cannot be enabled at the same time.
